Aon Benfield's Global Catastrophe Recap report found that 140 tornadoes touched down in the United States in the Midwest, Southeast, and Mid-Atlantic before the end of February. Six of those tornadoes were rated as EF3. February also produced 2017's first EF4 tornado, generating winds of over 180 mph, according to the report.

Insured losses from the series of tornadoes that hit during the first two months of year have left insurers nursing losses valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, and there are fears this total will rise further, said Aon. In addition to tornadoes, heavy rainfall caused severe flooding and the near-collapse of the Oroville Dam spillway in California. In addition to these catastrophes, major flooding occurred in Peru, Chile, Indonesia and Australia, while a 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit the Philippines.
